Here are some common questions that may help with your application.

  • What has happened to Community Plus, Learn & Grow and MoneySkills?
The three schemes have been combined into one programme, Discovery Grants.
  • What kind of organisations can you fund?
We make grants to UK registered charities, Community Interest Companies and Credit Unions. We can only provide grants to organisations registered in the UK, including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Our programme aims to support small, local charities. Please note, we can't fund start ups. You must have at least a full year of accounts registered with the relevant commission.
  • Do I have to apply for £5,000?
No. We make grants from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand. Whatever you need to deliver a project, up to a maximum of £5,000.
  • Will I be more successful if I gets lots of people to nominate my charity?
No. Discovery Grants are not awarded on the volume of applications we receive. We ask for just one application to be submitted as any duplicates are removed.
  • What sort of things are most likely to get funding?
Projects which specifically improve skills, knowledge or innovation for disadvantaged people in the UK. It is important to explain how the grant will help disadvantaged people and how it will improve skills, knowledge or innovation.
  • What is your definition of "disadvantaged people"?
Any group of people who cannot participate fully in society. There is no exhaustive list but a few examples would be people on restricted income, who are rurally isolated or disabled. It can include people anywhere in the UK, not just in areas of high deprivation, who are excluded or who face barriers to taking part in day-to-day activities.
  • What does "local" mean?
This can vary as it may be a charity that is active in one village or town or it could be a charity that works in two or three counties. What it doesn't mean is a whole region such as East Anglia or a charity working throughout Wales, for example.
  • There isn't much room on the nomination form - why is that?
We want to make the process really simple in order to help small charities to access funding. The form has space for only the essential information that we need to make a decision. You should be able to answer each of the three questions with a single sentence. Please do not send any other documents to us.
  • Are there any deadlines?
There are no deadlines, we operate a rolling grants programme. You can make an application at any time throughout the year.
  • How will I know that the Foundation has received the application?
We are unable to acknowledge receipt of your application due the volume we receive but if you are successful you will hear from us within 6 weeks.
  • How will I know if I have been successful?
We will send an offer email to the charity contact on the application form. Grants are awarded every month, so if your charity does not receive a grant offer e-mail within 6 weeks then they have not been successful.
  • If we were unsuccessful, when can I apply again and is it worth it?
There is about a 1 in 10 chance of being awarded a grant with our current application volumes. You can therefore make an application again at any time.
  • If our charity has been awarded a grant, when can we apply again?
If your organisation has already benefited from a grant, you won’t be eligible to apply for another for at least a year. For example, if you receive a grant anytime in 2017 then you’ll need to wait until January 2019 before applying again.
